Spending time in the kitchen inspires me, challenges me and quite frankly, makes me happy! I guess it’s safe to say, I’m a big foodie! If it’s healthy, organic, super flavorful, and good for you, I’m all about it! Cooking has become a big passion of mine over the years. I graduated with a culinary degree in 2005, but I will say that I’ve learned the most from cooking in the kitchen with my mom since I was a little girl. (She taught me how to make the BEST Buttercream Icing!) Sometimes even more than just cooking, I love to cook for others. Most of all, people I love! I guess you could say it’s my way of saying, “You’re important to me! Come! Let me feed you!”
I’m from the deep South (Birmingham, AL), born and raised to be exact! I love the South. I love southern food, deep southern accents and let’s not forget about southern hospitality (which you will NOT find in Miami). All are vital roles of growing up in the south! With that said, as my love for cooking has grown, so has my love for learning about different cultures, traveling (thanks to my hubby!) and testing out recipes from different cuisines, all with a healthy and flavorful twist!
Currently, we live in the heart of downtown Miami. When we first moved here we thought we would be here one year max. Within the three years of us being here, we got engaged, married, and had Gaby… and we are STILL here. (Help me, Jesus!) I’m not going to lie and tell you I love it, because in all honesty, I
hate do not like it. But I do try to make the most of it. We’ve met some great people here and the food scene in Miami is pretty incredible. And I do love the diversity. Although, I am very hopeful that we’ll get to move to the ‘burbs soon! 🙂 *Fingers crossed!*
You might notice I talk a lot about my husband, Omar and our little girl, Gaby. They’re the loves of my life! My life would be pointless without them. My husband’s family is Guyanese, not to be confused with Ghana, that’s in Africa! Guyana is in South America (right above Brazil)! He was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale. I have learned SO much about Guyanese and Caribbean cuisines and cultures through his mom and other women in the family. My love for curry has definitely come from them! Gaby just turned 2 and let me tell you, life has never been better! She’s the sweetest little girl ever. We’re totally smitten with her and every single thing she does and says. Yes, we are “those” parents! I make no apologies. Watching her grow, change and learn new things makes life so beautiful. God has truly blessed us with our angel! We are forever grateful for her.
So, here’s my best attempt at showing you how important you are to me through my food. I hope you don’t mind, I’m a bit of a health nut. But I will make some “not so good for you” foods from time to time! Lately, I’ve been on a vegan/vegetarian kick. Stick with me. My husband is hoping this too shall pass! I’m a strong believer in cooking with organic and locally grown ingredients. I firmly believe food has the power to heal or kill our bodies. So, with that said, let’s go make something healthy!
