Croatia

My husband and I LOVE to travel.  He is constantly thinking about the next country we’re going to go to.  I mean constantly!  Every week I hear him say, “Babe, let’s look into ____ or maybe _____… Oh!  Or what about ______?!”  We love learning about other cultures.  We love experiencing the food in other countries and overall learning how other people live their lives. Since we’ve been together, we’ve been to 8 COUNTRIES!  Eight countries in less than 4 years…that’s hard to believe!  I always hoped and even prayed God would give me a husband that loves to travel, but never did I believe we would see so much in such a short amount of time?!  I haven’t done a very good job keeping up with our travels and actually documenting all that we saw and ate… of coarse we posted a million pics on Facebook… but that’s just not the same to me.

So…. here’s my attempt at going back and trying to remember what we did, what we saw, and what we ate & drank!  We vacationed to Croatia right after Omar graduated from nursing school in July of 2014.  Croatia is a BEAUTIFUL country.  If you’ve never been, I highly recommend going.  We took several day-trips into other countries and in other parts of Croatia so that we could see as much as possible.  We spent a whole 2 weeks there, so we really got to see a lot!

The food was delicious, we learned a little bit about the history of the country, and the beaches were a wonderful experience…although a lot different than our beaches in the states, their sand is very rocky and the Adriatic Sea is soooooooo COLD!!!  Yes, even in the summertime!  But that didn’t stop us from jumping in and going for a swim!

We started off our trip in Zagreb for 4-5 days… we went hiking and came across this medieval palace one day.  Zagreb has a super cute City Center too.  We spent a lot of time there exploring shops, cafes, and the local pubs!   Most of the people were friendly, but I will admit that we did get lots of stares.  Blatant – OMG kind of stares.  Apparently, they’re not too keen on “bi-racial” couples there… Not to worry – we didn’t let that stop us from having a good time!  We laughed it off and went about our way!

We took a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park.  Plitvice Lakes is a 295 sq. km forest reserve in central Croatia.  It’s known for a chain of 16 terraced lakes, joined by waterfalls that extend into a limestone canyon. Walkways and hiking trails wind around and across the water.  OMG – absolutely breath taking!  The pictures really do it no justice… such a beautiful thing to see and we had a wonderful time hiking through the trails.  Take a backpack with some waters and snacks because if you hike the trail we did, it’s a good 4-5 miles with no where to grab a bite to eat until you’re completely finished.

Oh, Dubrovnik!  If you ever go to Croatia, Dubrovnik is a MUST SEE!!!  The seafood here is some of the best I’ve ever eaten.  Yes, I live in South Florida and I would rather eat seafood from Dubrovnik.  It’s unbelievably delicious!!!  We stayed in a tiny B&B here… Not my favorite place that we stayed…as it was right over a pizzeria that reeked of anchovies and Italian food (which we love), but we smelled just like the pizzeria the whole time we were at this B&B.  AND…the worst part of all is there was NO hot water!  I know, I know… snotty American needs her hot water…it was brick COLD water!!!  Ahhh… but in all honesty, we were right in the middle of the little Old Town of Dubrovnik where you could walk every where.  The beach was in walking distance too…which was perfect for us!  We spent 3 nights here and 3 nights at the Hotel Neptun…which was right up my alley!   I’m not going to lie, I really love staying in 5 star hotels when on vacation, or anywhere for that matter!  My husband rolls his eyes and laughs at me, but I’m a firm believer in that once you hit a certain age, let’s just say your 30s… comfort, convenience, and amenities are so much more important than anything!  🙂  Here’s a few of our pictures from Dubrovnik!

I LOVE European Cathedrals!  I think they’re so unique and beautiful.  The architecture is amazing.

Last but not least… Here are a few pictures of some of the food and drinks we had.  One of the things Omar does in EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY that we go to is this:  where ever we go to eat, he always asks the waiter what the indigenous beer of that country is and then we partake and pretend like we’re a native!

Drinks while lounging on the Copacabana Beach!

We went on a day trip where we “island hopped” to the Elaphite Islands of Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan.  SO MUCH FUN!!!  They fed us lunch on the boat that took us to each island… the next two pictures are our lunch!

Every time we go to Europe we eat our weight in GELATO.  It is seriously the BEST ice cream you’ll ever eat.  Makes me want some right NOW!!!

The next picture is food we ate about 5 or 6 times throughout our visit!  It’s called Ćevapčići… We LOVED it to say the least!

This next dessert was so delicious!  It’s called Vanilla Custard Cream Cake!
